Rembrandt self-portrait in 1658

Our current Featured Photo is actually a painting — a self-portrait of Rembrandt. I featured the story of Rembrandt on September 14.

It is thought that the Dutch painter Rembrandt may have had exotropia. Although it would appear from the photos that his right eye drifts outward, he most likely painted himself looking in a mirror. This would mean that his left eye was the straying eye. Click on the photo for a larger view.

About Lois (admin)

I've lived with strabismus over half a century. Also called crossed eyes, lazy eye, turned eye, squint, double vision, wall eyes, floating, wandering, wayward, or drifting eyes, approximately 1 in every 25 to 50 people suffers from this condition. Strabismus not only affects vision. Many suffer social embarassment, lost job opportunities, and a host of other problems. Yet, living with eyes apart forces us to adapt, meet the challenge, and become stronger.
